Statement: Antisemitism in the Labour Party

11 July 2019

Last night (10th July 2019) the BBC aired a Panorama programme that exposed the extent to which antisemitism is tolerated within the UK Labour Party, and the appalling treatment of a number of former Labour staff members, one of whom said he was driven to contemplate suicide. The programme revealed that members of Labour's "dispute resolutions team", whose job was to investigate complaints, were obstructed and subjected to political interference from the highest levels in the party.

The Scottish Jewish Community has seen the results of this first hand, when Labour members who expressed grossly anti-Jewish views were reinstated or even promoted, and has issued the following statement:

Last night's Panorama on Labour antisemitism was extremely distressing.

Not only has the Labour party failed, at the highest level, to stamp out anti-Jewish racism, the leadership appear to have actively intervened to stop this issue from being dealt with.

We would call on Scottish Labour to demonstrate leadership, support whistle blowers and to push for serious action to be taken to deal with antisemitism.

We are grateful to those whistle-blowers who have bravely spoken out. They should not have to face legal action for speaking up about antisemitism. It would be tragic to think that the so called anti-racist party takes serious action against those that speak out on racism, but not against those who engage in it."
